The Oak Ridge Heritage and Preservation Association is proud to present for purchase the following products that tell the history of the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.  All prices include sales tax, shipping is extra.

    1. The Oak Ridge Story by George O. Robinson, Jr.  With permission of the family, this was reprinted in 2007 by ORHPA.  Many books have been written about the Manhattan Project but none of those authors have written a more complete record as G. O. Robinson.  As the Army Public Relations officer, Robinson’s assignment allowed him to have access to the overall Project which he shares with his audience in his book.  $33.00

     

      2. Oak Ridge, Tennessee, The Secret City Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Gates Opening by ORHPA members Barbara “Bobbie” Lynch Martin, Emily Westcott Hunnicutt and Don Hunnicutt.  This pictorial book celebrates the gate opening to the City of Oak Ridge on March 19, 1949.  $33.00

     

    Chapter  1.  The Gates-  History of the security gates that enclosed the Reservation are illustrated by twenty-one photographs taken from 1943 to 1949.

     

    Chapter   2   Elza Gate Opening Ceremony – The opening ceremony of March 19, 1949 captured in thirteen illustrated photographs.

     

    Chapter  3.  The Gate Opening Parade – Floats, dignitaries, bands, Hollywood movie stars and more are shown in sixty illustrated photographs.

     

    Chapter  4.  The Luncheon – Hollywood stars, Washington notables, Governors and other dignitaries are shown enjoying afternoon dining in eight illustrated photographs.

     

    Chapter  5.  Official Dedication Ceremony at Blankenship Field – A crowd of several hundred gathered to hear welcoming speeches from the Vice President, Alben Barkley, Atomic Energy Commission officials, Governors, Senators, Hollywood stars and others.  The dedication is captured in seven illustrated photographs.   

     

    Chapter  6.  The Fashion Show – Presented by the Oak Ridge Woman’s Club, the latest fashions on stunning models were viewed by a packed crowd held in the Oak Ridge High School auditorium.  Two illustrated photographs capture the heart-beat of the event.

     

    Chapter  7.  The Banquet – Ending the day’s event was a lavish banquet held at the Oak Terrace Ballroom in Grove Center.  The twelve illustrated photographs give you a glimpse of the evening’s gala.

     

    Chapter  8.  American Museum of Atomic Energy – The first museum of atomic energy made it’s debut with a VIP Friday night opening which was attended by Hollywood movie stars and other noted dignitaries.  There are thirty-eight illustrated photographs of that Friday night opening and how the Museum has progressed throughout the years.

     

    Chapter  9.  Welcome to Our Town – Starting in the eastern section of Oak Ridge and finishing in the western section, the authors have two-hundred forty seven “then and now” photographs showing the progression of the town from the 1940’s to present day.

     

    The book concludes with photographs of the ORHPA Historic Preservation Awards that are given to public-use facility that reflect guidelines outlined for historic preservation. 

     

                3.  Operation Open Sesame – A documentary film written and directed by Keith McDaniel and produced by ORHPA for the 60th anniversary of the opening of the gates to Oak Ridge, TN on March 19, 1949.  $22.00

     

    4     Cooking Behind the Fence is a collection of recipes and recollections compiled      by the Oak Ridge 43’ Club.   $16.50

     

    5.  The City Is Born – ORHPA received special permission from the Department of Energy to publish the first printing of Fred Ford’s telling of how the City was conceived and built.  Ford was the USAEC Community Affairs Director.  $33.00

     

          6. 1945 Oak Ridge City Map (25” X 70”) Prepared September 27, 1945, by Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill architect/engineers and the Roan-Anderson Company.  $10.00

         

          7.  Souvenir Postcard – One of Ed Westcott’s most famous photographs made into a souvenir postcard showing a crowd of jubilant people celebrating the end of WWII.  Westcott was the official photographer for the Manhattan Project.  $3.00

          8.  For Your Information A Guide To Oak Ridge - Originally printed in the fall of 1946 as a service to Oak Ridge residents, both old and new. This booklet tells how Oak Ridge was operated and managed, how the city was named, who to call for house maintenance, services for residents, schools, hospitals, a city map, housing, contact information for area businesses and more interesting facts.  ORHPA reprinted this booklet in May 2011.  $10.00
